The official model name is Debut EVO 2, not Debut Carbon EVO 2, although the carbon tonearm explains why that informal name sometimes appears. It should also be treated separately from the older Debut Carbon EVO and the more expensive Debut PRO models.
Design and build
The Debut EVO 2 follows Pro-Ject’s familiar minimalist approach, with a plain MDF plinth, hand-painted finish options and a compact footprint. Its 415 × 113 × 320 mm dimensions and 6 kg weight place it firmly in the serious entry-level hi-fi category rather than the portable record-player market.
A 300 mm die-cast aluminium platter sits above a belt-driven sub-platter and uses an internal TPE damping ring to reduce platter ringing. Pro-Ject also describes the platter as anti-magnetic, which is useful if the owner later moves towards a compatible moving-coil cartridge.
The arm is an 8.6-inch one-piece carbon design with an integrated headshell, aluminium bearing block and TPE-damped counterweight. Anti-skate is handled by a traditional thread-and-weight system, which is effective but may feel fiddly to users accustomed to a simple dial.

The supplied Pick it MM EVO cartridge makes the package more approachable because the cartridge is pre-fitted. It is a moving-magnet design with an elliptical stylus, 7 mV output and a recommended tracking force of 1.8 g, so it needs a 47 kOhm MM phono input or an external MM phono stage.
The deck deliberately omits a built-in phono preamp, Bluetooth and USB. This keeps the design focused on analogue replay, but it also means it will not connect directly to a normal line input, wireless speaker or computer without extra equipment.
Upgrade potential is a major part of the proposition. Pro-Ject lists compatible paths including phono stages, power supplies, mats, a record puck, sub-platter options, cartridge changes and a balanced-system route when the cartridge, cabling and phono electronics are suitable.
Setup
The Debut EVO 2 arrives partly disassembled, as is normal for this type of hi-fi turntable. Setup involves placing it on a level, rigid surface, releasing transport parts, fitting the belt, platter and felt mat, connecting the power supply, attaching the dust cover if wanted, and wiring the RCA and earth connections to an MM phono input or phono stage.
Although the cartridge is pre-installed, the counterweight, tracking force and anti-skate still need careful adjustment. For the supplied Pick it MM EVO cartridge, the manual specifies 1.8 g or 18 mN tracking force and the second groove on the anti-skate stub.
Daily use is simple once adjusted, but it is hands-on. Anyone uncomfortable with cueing a tonearm, stopping the motor manually or making basic tracking-force checks may prefer a more automated turntable.
Performance
In day-to-day use, the Debut EVO 2 is a fully manual turntable. The user starts the motor, selects 33 or 45 rpm, cues the arm with the lift lever and stops the motor at the end of a side; there is no auto-stop, auto-lift or automatic arm return.
Official specifications quote wow and flutter of ±0.16% at 33 rpm and ±0.14% at 45 rpm, with speed variance of ±0.40% and ±0.50% respectively. The belt-drive system, electronic speed control, improved motor suspension and damped feet are all intended to support stable, low-noise playback when the deck is properly levelled and placed on a suitable support.
Connectivity is straightforward but strictly analogue. The turntable outputs via stereo RCA sockets with a separate ground connection, so the partnering amplifier, receiver or external phono stage must accept a moving-magnet cartridge.
The underside speed switch is more convenient than manual belt repositioning, but it is less visible than a top-mounted control. The lack of USB, Bluetooth and automation should be seen as a deliberate hi-fi trade-off rather than an oversight.
Sound quality
The Debut EVO 2’s sound should be understood through its engineering, supplied cartridge and the available review consensus rather than as a universal result in every system. Supported commentary generally points to a lively, open and detailed presentation, with an attractive midrange and good handling of instruments and voices when set up correctly.
The heavier TPE-damped aluminium platter, carbon tonearm and detachable analogue outputs are all consistent with a deck designed for clean, low-resonance replay. Its pre-mounted Pick it MM EVO cartridge also gives a ready-made starting point, which is useful for buyers who do not want to choose a cartridge immediately.
There is, however, a meaningful caveat around tonal balance. Some owner reports describe the stock cartridge as bright, harsh or sibilant in certain systems, although alignment, tracking force, anti-skate, phono-stage loading, records and loudspeakers can all contribute to those symptoms.
