It suits beginners, travelling DJs and beatmakers who want a self-contained way to cut with records without carrying a full turntable and mixer setup.

Its main appeal is convenience rather than hi-fi refinement. The PT01 Scratch adds an adjustable Scratch Slide Switch to the wider PT01 portable turntable idea, so it should not be confused with the PT01 USB, which lacks that scratch-focused control.

This is best approached as a fun, affordable portablism deck for practice, especially with 7-inch scratch records. Buyers expecting the feel, torque and isolation of a full-size DJ turntable should set their expectations accordingly.

The PT01 Scratch uses a compact case-style design with a protective dust cover and integrated handle. Its footprint is small enough for portable use, and the self-contained layout includes a built-in speaker, tonearm, controls and connections in one unit.

Construction is deliberately lightweight and portable, with specialist feedback describing the enclosure as largely plastic. That makes sense for travel and informal use, but it also means the deck should not be judged like a heavy full-size direct-drive DJ model.

Controls are practical and simple. There are settings for 33⅓, 45 and 78 RPM, a pitch control, a tone control, audio volume, input gain and the prominent Scratch Slide Switch for cutting the audio.

The scratch control is a switch-style mute/unmute device rather than a traditional long-throw crossfader. It is adjustable and user-replaceable, which is useful for different hand positions and for owners who later want to modify the deck.

For portable use, six D-cell batteries are fitted with the positive poles facing the handle. At home or in a studio space, the supplied 12 V adaptor is the more straightforward power option.

Adding external audio is also uncomplicated. A phone, tablet or computer can feed the 3.5 mm stereo input for a beat or backing track, while USB can be connected to a computer for recording the vinyl signal, remembering that USB neither powers the deck nor carries the stereo-input signal.

Day-to-day operation is straightforward and aimed at quick practice. The platter starts when the tonearm is moved over the record, and the pre-balanced tonearm and cartridge are intended to be ready to use without conventional tonearm setup.

The three speed settings broaden record compatibility, including 7-inch scratch records, standard LPs and 78 RPM discs. Numark does not publish detailed wow and flutter, torque or tracking-force figures in the reviewed material, so claims about precision or DJ-deck stability should be avoided.

For scratching, the PT01 Scratch is most convincing as a compact practice platform. The small format, switch-style control and lightweight construction make it very different from a club turntable and mixer, but they also make it far easier to carry and use in informal settings.

Its outputs make it more flexible than the built-in speaker alone suggests. RCA outputs can feed powered speakers, a mixer or a recording chain, while the two headphone sockets are handy for private practice.

The PT01 Scratch should be assessed as a portable scratch-practice deck rather than an audiophile turntable. Its built-in speaker is included for convenience, cueing and close-range use, not for room-filling playback or high-fidelity listening.

Using the RCA outputs or headphones should be the more sensible route for sampling, practice and casual playback. Those outputs give the deck a practical role in a small beatmaking or scratch setup, especially when portability matters more than maximum sonic performance.

The tonearm and cartridge are pre-balanced and ready to use, and the cartridge is user-replaceable. However, Numark does not specify the cartridge model in the official material reviewed, and the lightweight portable design means buyers should not expect the cartridge quality, isolation or stability of a dedicated hi-fi deck.

For checking records, practising cuts or capturing vinyl ideas over USB, the sound facilities are useful. For careful archival transfers or serious living-room listening, a conventional hi-fi turntable with a known cartridge and better isolation would be a more appropriate choice.
